The Research Institute of Geodesy, Topography and Cartography (VÚGTK, v. v. i.) is a public research institution established by the Czech Office for Surveying, Mapping and Cadastre (ČÚZK). Its core mission is to conduct research, development, and expert activities in the fields of geodesy, cartography, geoinformatics, metrology, and related disciplines.
Our activities are mainly focused on:
- long-term operational processing of data from the DORIS, GPS and Galileo satellite systems (for determining satellite orbit parameters and Earth rotation, for tracking the movement of reference stations, for monitoring and modelling the influence of the atmosphere)
- research and development of measurement systems to determine gravitational acceleration
- involvement in research and activities leading to the definition, implementation and maintenance of international coordinate, altitude and gravity systems
- monitoring of permanent stations of the Global Navigation Satellite Systems
- metrology in surveying with a focus on construction and engineering
- calibration and accuracy analysis of surveying and measuring instruments
- operation of the Surveying Library
- organisation of professional seminars in the field of surveying
- maintenance of national standards
- specific research needs for the public administration
The implementation of these activities is carried out with the use of special measurement and evaluation infrastructure, which is unique in the Czech Republic and often worldwide.
In solving research projects, VÚGTK cooperates with domestic and foreign institutions.
