The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) is a modern research- and clinically-oriented institution focused on the field of mental health. The research activities of the NIMH are divided into three research programs and seven research centers. The institute is a center for basic, experimental, and applied research - it focuses on research into the neurobiological and psychosocial mechanisms of mental illness and on the development and testing of new treatment methods. The NIMH also participates in shaping the organization of mental health care, including the reform of psychiatric care.
The clinical part of the NIMH provides both standard and highly specialized inpatient and outpatient psychiatric care. At the same time, as the Department of Psychiatry and Medical Psychology of the 3rd Faculty of Medicine of Charles University, it provides undergraduate and postgraduate education in both clinical fields (psychiatry, psychology) and in the field of neuroscience.
